Sports Program Director

B.A. (Hons) Sports Studies, Sports Management & Development, Member of the Chartered Management Institute 

Ben is a sports performance professional who has worked across a number of sports industries and associations including Wales Golf, Rugby Union of England, and Football Association of England. He is presently employed as the Sports Program Director with the University of Gloucestershire which involves the management of the universities sports department.

As Former Performance Director for Wales Golf, Ben was responsible for:

  • Formulation and delivery of the performance elements of the Golf Union of Wales (GUW) strategic plan and vision document

  • Lead the delivery of GUW high performance program and attainment of its goals 

  • Oversee all logistics relating to Welsh players and teams at national and international events including European and World Championships

  • Development of a holistic performance lifestyle program to support young elite athletes

  • Strategic development of the performance program, support systems, staff and budget

  • Responsible for Talent ID system and squad selection across national, regional and academy squads which can include up to 75 athletes aged 11 to 21

  • Project manager for GUW Coaching Centers (player and coach development program)

  • Responsible for staff development including training needs analysis and CPD program

  • Line manage a team of 10 staff including performance coaches, sports psychologists, strength and conditioning coaches and an administrator

  • Appoint, train and support a network of volunteer Team Managers, Selectors and Captains



Performance Staff

Lead Strength and Conditioning Coach

PhD, BSc, CSCS, SPS Level 4, CYQ-3

Zach is passionate about improving performance through the art and science of strength and conditioning, taking great satisfaction in supporting a golfer to achieve their goals.


With Wales Golf, Zach's role is to enhance performance and reduce the risk of injury through robust methods of strength and conditioning. Specifically, he was responsible for individual screening techniques, programme design, pre-round warm up, post-round recovery strategies and nutrition.

Experience and achievement highlights include:

  • Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS)

  • SPS Level 4 - Sports Massage

  • Joanne Elphinston Movement Systems (JEMS) Accreditation

  • CYQ - Level 3 advanced trainer

  • Captain of Wales Men’s Golf Team 2015/2017

  • Represented Wales as a competitor between 2002-2008

  • 11 national and international titles and holds two course records.

  • Member of the Walker Cup squad 2005 and 2007

  • Member of the winning European team vs Asia Pacific

  • Member of the GB & I boys team 2004 and 2005

  • Member of the winning junior Ryder Cup team

  • One session per month with Dr Zack Gold (former Walker Cup Player for Wales Golf and Tour Professional

  • Two Sessions per week with the University of Gloucestershire S & C Team

  • Psychology and Performance Lifestyle Support for improved performance

  • One Session per month to develop Individual Practice and Performance Improvement Sessions - face to face and Skype sessions with Dr Zack Gold


  • Three x 1-2-1 Sessions with a qualified Nutritionist 

  • UDA Performance specialists will provide advice on diet and nutrition to support Golf performance.



The UDA-Golf Academy is open to male and female golfers.

Cotswold Hills Golf Club

The course is set in one of the most idyllic settings in the United Kingdom, the world famous Cotswold area of natural beauty. Cotsworld Hills Golf Club


  • Players who have a handicap of 5 and under (male) and 12 and under handicap (female) may be able to represent the University of Gloucester in the British University in the British University and Colleges Sport programme 


  • Students with higher handicaps (5 for men or 12 for women) will be able to compete in club level competitions at the Cotswold Hills Golf Club and other clubs in the surrounding area

World Class PGA Coaching for ALL UDA-Golf Academy Student/Athletes
  • Potential to represent the University of Gloucestershire in BUCS events

  • Students with higher handicaps will be able to compete in club level competitions at the Cotswold Hills Golf Club and surrounding area courses

  • Year round playing season – Sept to May (summer event options also available)

  • Individual coaching sessions with a top PGA golf professional, one hour per week, every two weeks, in a 1-2-1 coaching and playing format

  • One, on course group session per month with the PGA professional

  • Membership at the Cotswold Golf Club for year round playing privileges: UDA home course 

  • Students are eligible for Cotswold Golf Club competitions if they meet the required handicap

  • Support from the UDA program director to tailor an appropriate competition program for individual players (based on their progress and handicap) outside of the regular University competition

  • Relevant Insurance, student membership fees and BUCS Entry fees

  • UDA golf shirts and golf bag

 Play at Ryder Cup and European Tour Championship Courses

UDA-Golf offers, as part of the academy experience, the opportunity to play at

THE Ryder Cup and European Championship  Courses through the year.


Play at TWO world-class courses (per year) that have hosted the British Open in the past and will in the future such as: Royal Lytham & St Ann's, Royal Birkdale, The Belfry or Celtic Manor.
